Start at the top of the wall and insert the tip of an air chisel into the mortar joint between the top row of bricks and the second row of bricks. Chisel between the bricks just enough to break the bond and pop the top brick loose. Alternatively, use a hand chisel and hammer.

When it comes to brick cleaning, brick acid is the best product available. It dissolves sodium carbonate, a common cause of efflorescing salts in brickwork, and removes dirt from the surface of bricks, as well as limescale, cement, mortar, oil, grease, and other surface marks.
Mix together a solution of one part muriatic acid to 10 parts water. While the brick is still wet, apply the diluted muriatic acid. Bubbles will form as the acid reacts with the cement.
After 20 to 30 seconds of hammering, you should notice the thinset breaking apart. If not, pour some more boiling water over it to loosen it. You can also use a masonry chisel that is the same width. Continue removing the thinset in small chunks until you’ve removed enough to accommodate your new tiles.

One further point to note is that you should never remove more than 2 bricks at once. If you have quite a few to do, replace 2 and leave them to cure correctly for at least a week before tackling any more.
Look for an indentation on the brick’s surface. Older bricks do not have a dent in the middle, called a frog. Instead, older bricks only have a lip at the edge to hold the mortar in place between the bricks.
